Digital Product Passports

Introduction

A Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a structured, machine readable record of a product that is linked to the physical item through a data carrier such as a QR code. It carries identity, material, durability, repairability and compliance information, and it makes that information available to the people and systems entitled to see it, from consumers to recyclers to market surveillance authorities.

This section is the foundation of tieback Knowledge. It explains the passport as a concept before the later sections examine the law that mandates it, the standards that carry it, and the work involved in delivering one.

Why This Section Matters

The passport is not a document format. It is a legal instrument defined by Regulation (EU) 2024/1781 (ESPR) and by the product specific rules that follow it, and it changes what a manufacturer is expected to know about its own products. Teams that treat it as a labelling exercise usually discover late that the underlying product data does not exist, is not verifiable, or is owned by a supplier who has never been asked for it.

Understanding the passport properly, before selecting tooling or committing to a schema, is the single most effective way to avoid rework.
