# Golden Record

> The governed, reconciled representation of a product produced by matching records from several systems and resolving conflicts under defined rules.

## Definition

A governed, trusted representation of a real-world entity, such as a product, created by matching
the records that describe it across several systems and resolving the conflicts between them under
defined survivorship rules. It is an outcome of reconciliation rather than a system, a copy or a
storage location.

## Expanded Explanation

A golden record is produced, not found. Its construction normally involves identifying the records
that refer to the same product, deciding which attribute values survive when sources disagree,
recording which source each surviving value came from, and publishing the result for downstream use.
Each of those steps is governed: the rules are written down, owned and versioned, so the same inputs
produce the same output and a value can be explained after the fact.

Because it is produced, a golden record is only as good as the authority behind its inputs. Where an
attribute has a designated system of record, the survivorship rule usually defers to it. Where no
authority has been designated, the rule falls back to weaker signals such as completeness or
recency, and the resulting value is correspondingly weaker as evidence.

Golden records are also not permanent. They are recalculated whenever source data changes, and a
mature implementation keeps the history of what the golden value was at a given point in time. That
history is what allows an organisation to explain a passport published two years ago rather than
only the values it holds today.

## Why It Matters

Digital Product Passport publication requires one coherent set of values per product. Where product
information is spread across engineering, commercial, manufacturing and supplier systems, that
coherent set is exactly what a golden record provides. Publishing straight from disconnected sources
tends to produce passports that contradict each other, and offers no explanation of why a particular
value was chosen.

## Common Misconceptions

#### The golden record is the system of record

A system of record is a designated place that holds an authoritative value. A golden record is the
reconciled result assembled from such places. Conflating the two hides the reconciliation logic
that decides what is actually published.

#### Creating golden records is a technology purchase

Matching and survivorship can be automated, but the rules they apply are governance decisions. A
platform configured without agreed authority simply automates the existing disagreement.
